01.22.2021 Pastor's Note | Being the Light

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14)

Good Day Family,

Being the Light

I imagine when Jesus’ disciples heard him utter these words, they might have been confused. He often confounded them with his teaching because he challenged their thinking. He didn’t allow them to be comfortable with the way they used to think or the way things used to be. Jesus didn’t take them out of the world, but he did take them out of their comfort zone so that they could become partners in His mission and ministry to the world.

I think they might have been confused because they would have considered Jesus to be the light of the world. We still do as well as evidenced by the multiple hymns that proclaim “Jesus…the light of the world.” Both can be true, and most importantly, both must be true for that light to spread. The only way for Jesus to show up in the world today is for the body of Christ—the church—to show up in the world. We must be agents of healing and reconciliation, which are world needs desperately. We have to turn our focus from within ourselves and look out and see how we can minister beyond ourselves.

Let our light shine with hope that a new day is dawning. We have work to do…reflecting the light of Jesus and becoming the light of the world.

In hopeful prayer,

Be well,

Pastor Cheryl
